Register to play hockey
Registration Closed
October 11, 2011
The UMHA has closed registration for the 2011/2012 hockey season. We are full at most divisions. However, we will begin a waiting list and contact you if additional players can be accommodated.
Note that the late registration fee of $525 will continue to apply. Should you wish to be on the waiting list, please call 905-477-9707 and leave a message with your name, phone number, your child’s name, and your child’s year of birth.
General Registration Information
- Registration is open to all players residing within the town of Markham. The UMHA area includes the neighbourhoods: East of Hwy 404, South of 19th Avenue, North of Steeles Avenue and West of McCowan Road. Preference will be given to residents within these boundaries.
- Registration is conducted on a first come, first served basis. A waiting list may be in effect for late registrants. Avoid disappointment—register early as last year there were waiting lists in many divisions.
- New registrants must provide proof of age (copy of a birth certificate) to the UMHA to receive final acceptance. Please send to the attention of the Registrar.
- The UMHA reserves the right to refuse any applicant.

Games and Practice Schedule
Our program schedule is finalized in mid-September, after registration closes. Until we have final registration numbers by division, we cannot allocate our ice and determine our program schedules.
The program schedule will be posted on our website as soon as it is available. Check the division sections of our site after mid-September.
We understand that you need to plan your family's schedule. You may use last year's program schedule as a guideline as we try to maintain consistency from year to year. However, you must be aware that this is subject to change. Program schedules are available on the homepage for each division.
Mini Mite and Mite Registration
Players born in 2005, 2006, and 2007
UMHA offers both a Mini Mite and a Mite program. The Mini Mite program is designed specifically for 4 and 5 year olds who are brand new to hockey and, in many cases, to skating as well. The Mite program is designed specifically for 5 year olds who may have played some hockey or at a minimum can skate and for 6 year olds.
During registration, you will be offered only the option to register in the Mite/Hockey School. During evaluations in late September, the UMHA will evaluate your child to make sure he/she is placed in the division that will provide them the right development program for their level of experience.
New Players Who are 9 Years of Age or Older
To register a player who has never registered with a minor hockey association in Canada and who is 9 years of age or older, send an email to info@umhahockey.org with the following information about the player you wish to register:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Physical address
- Email address
The registrar will send you a return email with information on how to register within 3 (three) business days.
Full-Time Goalie Position
The following is an excerpt from Section 2.3 of the UMHA Coach and Convener Manual:
“Beginning in the Peewee division, players may choose to become full-time goalies. In divisions where there are players who only want to play goal, the convener shall ensure that these players are equally distributed among the teams. If there are more goalies than teams, the position must be shared equitably on as many teams as necessary to accommodate all goalies.
“A full-time goalie position cannot be guaranteed as it is dependant on the number of players who want to play in net in a division in any given year. The division convener will allocate goalies on as equitable a basis as possible among teams in the division.”
Hockey Fees
Hockey Canada Service Fee
Effective July 1, Hockey Canada will add a $2.00 service fee to each Hockey Canada Registration System credit card transaction. This fee is designed to increase funds to support web development of the Hockey Canada Registration system.

In order to receive the third and subsequent child discount, you must register each child in the same account in which you registered your first child. In other words, one parent account must be used to register all children and you must register them at the same time.
Note that the discount will be applied when your cart is complete and you are ready to check out and pay.
Payment by Credit Card Only
UMHA registration fees are payable with your VISA or MasterCard. Immediate online payment is required to complete registration.
Please follow all the instructions, complete your payment and print your receipt to ensure the process is complete. All aspects of the online registration process uses 128-bit encryption, which is the same level of security as online banking. In addition, all credit card transactions are processed live and no credit card information is ever stored.
Child Fitness Tax Credit
Please be aware that the receipt you receive when you complete registration is your receipt for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. The amount is indicated on the registration receipt that is emailed to each registrant at the time your UMHA registration is processed.
After completing registration, please:
- review your email receipt to locate the confirmation of registation, and
- print a copy for your records.
No other receipt will be provided.
Even though the hockey season does not conform to the tax year, you will be able to claim the full amount of your fees on the tax return for the calendar year in which the fees were paid. The year in which the tax credit can be claimed is determined by the date when the fees are paid, not when the activity takes place.
Visit the CRA website for further details on the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.
Refund Policy
Refunds will only be given with written requests. Please complete our Application for Refund form and submit your request to the UMHA, Attention: Registrar. Please allow approximately four weeks for processing your refund. There is a $50 processing fee on all refund requests.
If sweaters and socks have been received and used by your child, $30.00 will be deducted from your refund. Refunds will be prorated based on the following timeline:
